Research Team Member

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with interests and skills in respiratory physiology/high-altitude physiology/hypoxia/systems neuroscience. The Center for Aerospace Physiology Research Laborartory engages in both pre-clinical and clinical research studies to investigate the effects of extreme environments on neural structure and function. Primary funding is from the Department of Defense (DoD).

The ideal candidate will possess established skills in signal processing, specifically familiarity with acquisition and anlaysisi/interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, and functional near-infared spectroscopy. Experience in measurement of hypoxic ventilatory responsiveness, bench work experience (western blots, electrochemistry, immunohitochemistry), and past clinical research is highly desired. 

The new research team member will participate in three newly funded laboratory-based projects: (1) to determine if non-steady-state inspired oxygen affects cortical electrical activity (measured through EEG) and cognitive performance in both normobaric and hypobaric conditions; (2) to measure PaO2 derived from specific FiO2 concentrations delivered with and without safety pressure to generate necessary specifications for positive pressure breathing systems that confer maximal neuroprotection and resiliency within the cockpit; and (3) to characterize the physiologic effects of increased oxygen and hypergravity exposure upon cognitive performance, systemic serum biochemical profiles, and brain structure and function. Additionally, he/she will be expected to participate in future DoD-funded field studies conducted on USAF/USN military intallations.

We welcome recent or forthcoming advanced-degree graduates with a strong background in clinical medicine, biomedical, and/or electrical engineering, biophysics, neuroscience,  or physiology and an eagerness to work in an interdisciplinary team for the measurement of brain structure and function.

The Center for Aerospace Physiology research laboratory, co-directed by Dr. Michael Decker and Dr. Lisa Damato, is located in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics on the campus of Case Western Reserve University in the School of Medicine. Collaborations reach across the Case Western Reserve University campus to the Case School of Engineering, the College of Arts and Sciences, and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, and MetroHealth Medical Center. The lab is partially supported by the Department of Defense through collaborations with the 711th Human Performance Wing/Air Force Research Laboratory and the Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU-D), both located at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH. Excellent research facilities and resources are available at the University as well as at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Additionally, Cleveland is a diverse and interesting city with much to offer.

Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for NIH T-32 grant funding.
