PhD Research Philosophy

Research Philosophy

Graduate researchers are central to the department’s mission to push forward the boundaries of knowledge and understanding. PhD Coursework aims to integrate the basics of physiology and biophysics at different levels (from molecule to man) and emphasizes areas of study by our faculty.

  • We focus on the nervous, cardiovascular, and renal systems, and typically combine molecular and cellular level approaches in our research, often seeking integration with organ systems.
  • Most laboratories are involved in research that provides basic knowledge or seeks to cure diseases, ranging from Alzheimer’s, to Cancer, to Hypertension, …. View Departmental Research >>
  • Collaborations between laboratories within the School of Medicine, Cleveland, the Nation and International Research groups are common. Often these interactions directly involve graduate researchers.
  • Our departmental research seminar series invites internationally renowned researchers who also engage students at weekly lunch meetings and a special Q&A sessions. View Seminar Schedule >>
  • Our department has state-of-the art facilities. The renovation of nearly 40,000 square feet of space was completed in 2009. In the past 4 years, we have invested more than $3.5 million in core and general-use research equipment for our Research Groups. View Equipment. Large-scale instrumentation and resources are available through multiple centers and departments across campus.
