MD PhD Program

This program (the Medical Scientist Training Program – MSTP -) provides the opportunity for students registered in the MD program at CWRU or CCF to combine medical training with training in research in either of the two programs of the department:  the Biomedical Physiology Training Program or the Structural Biology & Biophysics Training Program.

Students complete the first two years of their medical training before starting research full-time in the laboratory of one of the primary or secondary faculty in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics.  Students are required to fulfill all the degree requirements for the Ph.D. training program they have entered before going back to the medical curriculum to complete the last two years of medical school.  This combined MD/Ph.D. program generally takes a total of six to seven years to complete.  The combined degree program strives to optimize coursework and research experience for future physicians interested in medical research and academic careers.

Most students receive full tuition waiver, a stipend, and health benefits during the full duration of their studies.
