Research Interests

The Richards lab is an interdisciplinary group that integrates nanotechnology, neuroscience, and biophysical chemistry.  A major component of the lab’s research is the development of single-molecule fluorescence imaging techniques that allow it to isolate individual membrane receptors. These studies primarily focus on the interaction of fluorophores with plasmonic metal structures to enhance the emission from fluorescently labeled proteins.  The lab uses these techniques to understand how modifications in membrane receptor trafficking and assembly alters neuronal function and is involved in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and addiction.
