Ph.D. in Structural Biology and Biophysics (SBB-TP)

The SBB-TP encourages a pre-application. See https://physiology.case.edu/apply-sbbtp/ for the SBB-TP pre-application.

Complete application procedures are as outlined for "Physiology and Biophysics" below (1 through 5) with the exception that students should select "sbb-tp: Structural Biology and Biophysics Training Program" rather than "Physiology and Biophysics" at step 4.

Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics

Applications to the Ph.D. program in Physiology and Biophysics are processed through the Case Western Reserve University Biomedical Sciences Training Program (BSTP). Students who wish to join the Department of Physiology and Biophysics directly should follow these specific instructions:

  1. Open the Case Western Reserve University School of Graduate Studies application web page (Link To Application Page), create an account and start an application.

  2. On page 2 of the application ("Enrollment Information"), under "Academic Program" scroll down to "Biomedical Sciences" and select "Biomedical Sciences Training Program". Complete the rest of the page.

  3. Continue to fill out the application pages (... 3. Personal Contact, 4. Emergency Contact, 5. Additional Information, 6. Educational History, 7. Test Scores, 8. Work Experience ...).

  4. On page 9 of the application ("BSTP Supplemental"), in the Priority Program of Interest box, select “Physiology and Biophysics”.  Selecting the Physiology and Biophysics Priority Program of Interest (PPI) option will identify you as a BSTP applicant that seeks admission specifically to the Physiology and Biophysics Ph.D. program.

  5. Complete the application as directed.

Deadlines for Ph.D. program applications:

Priority will be given to applications received by December 1. We will continue to review applications received after the priority deadline, but not beyond the final application deadline of January 15.  Your application will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee as soon as it is complete.

A completed application has all of the following parts:

  1. The completed online application.

  2. Official transcripts of undergraduate and graduate coursework sent to the BSTP office at the address below. The transcript must be in a sealed envelope from your university.

  3. Official scores of the GRE exam. Please have your scores sent to Case Western Reserve University (Institution Code 1105).

  4. Official score from the TOEFL exam if you are applying from Puerto Rico or a foreign country. Please have your scores sent to Case Western Reserve University (Institution Code 1105).

  5. Three letters of recommendation. The online application will request recommenders' contact info for electronic submission.

  6. Application fee (US $50). When you submit an online application, you may pay by check or credit card.

We will waive the application fee for students who are members of racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. Details on the waiver procedure are available on the BSTP application web page.
